In addition to animal protein and micronutrients, the developing young child also needs essential fatty acids (EFA). While it is widely assumed that the Indonesian habitual diet is deficient in EFA, the existing Indonesian Food Composition Table only included total fat content, but not fatty acid content of foods. Therefore, GAIN supported the Agricultural University in Bogor (IPB) to implement a study to determine the EFA content of various Indonesian foods, with a focus on those foods commonly consumed by pregnant and lactating women, older infants and young children. Savica’s principal was appointed to provided technical assistance and coordination for this study, which ultimately led to a supplement to the Indonesian Food Composition Table: the Fatty Acid Composition Table of Indonesian Foods.
